🤖 Instagram DMs to Feature New AI Chatbot Experience
Twitter: @alex193a
Meta is testing a new AI chatbot feature in Instagram DMs, similar to Snapchat's My AI tool. The generative AI tool would answer questions in real time within chat threads, offering advice for crafting more effective messages. This aligns with Instagram's shift toward expanding messaging options due to increased DM usage. While it's a small step in incorporating generative AI tools into social apps, it signals Meta's ambition to introduce AI personas and tools that could help users in various ways.
📦 Walmart Cuts Waste with Paper Mailers and Right-sized Boxes
Walmart plans to replace almost all plastic mailers with paper ones and "rightsize" cardboard boxes to reduce packaging waste from online orders. The company estimates this will eliminate 65 million plastic mailers (over 2,000 tons) in the U.S. by the end of its fiscal year. It's also implementing technology to create custom-fitted packages, reducing filler by 60% and waste by 26%. Additionally, Walmart will offer customers an option to opt out of single-use plastic bags and consolidate shipping for online orders.
🖥️ Businesses Turn to Kiosks for Innovative Solutions
According to the 2023 Square Future of Restaurants Report, 79% of consumers find kiosks simplify ordering, while 44% appreciate the self-paced menu review. Innovative uses include ordering and payment facilities, providing product information and marketing, aiding in-store product location, and facilitating loyalty program check-ins. Kiosks also offer low-cost solutions for enhancing customer experience and collecting consumer preferences data.
🔖EU Urges Platforms to Label AI-Generated Content to Combat Disinformation
European Union has urged companies to label AI-generated content as part of its Code of Practice on Online Disinformation. EU Commissioner Vera Jourova stressed that services like Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s Bard AI need to implement safeguards against misuse for generating disinformation. The EU also expects platforms to quickly adopt labeling AI-created content, enabling users to distinguish between human- and machine-generated content. This is expected to take place even before the Digital Services Act's compliance deadline on August 25.
